A shared starting point for sustainability reporting

NCV and NVZ, representing the sector, saw an opportunity: could we create a shared starting point that companies could build on, instead of each reinventing the wheel? NCV (Nederlandse Cosmetica Vereniging) en NVZ (Nederlandse Vereniging van Zeepfabrikanten) represent companies active in personal care and cleaning products. One of their key roles is to support members in adapting to new legislation—such as the upcoming Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Making the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) workable

Starting in 2025, many NCV and NVZ member companies must comply with CSRD requirements, including conducting a Double Materiality Assessment (DMA). For most, this assessment was unfamiliar and perceived as complex, abstract, and time-consuming. While each company operates in its own context, many face similar sustainability risks and opportunities—presenting a unique chance for a sector-wide approach.

Co-creation in action

Together with NCV and NVZ, The Terrace led a sector-wide DMA—combining in-depth research with collaborative workshops to uncover the key sustainability topics. This formed the basis for a collective framework that individual companies could customise to their specific operations. To make the process even more accessible, The Terrace worked with SALACIA to develop a user-friendly online module. This interactive tool breaks down the DMA process step-by-step, includes relevant documentation, and provides the flexibility for individual companies to adapt the sector findings to their own context.

From paper tiger to practical tool

With the sector DMA and SALACIA module in place, member companies now benefit from a clear and consistent foundation. They no longer need to start from zero—instead, they can build on a robust, pre-validated sector approach. This leads to better alignment, reduced duplication of effort, and faster progress toward CSRD compliance.

“What I really enjoyed about this project was its variety of challenges and tasks. We worked with NCV and NVZ to co-create the sector DMA, and with SALACIA to translate it into a practical tool. Together, we turned a complex process into something companies can actually work with.”
