Kwast Wijnkopers

From a carbon baseline to an SBTi-validated target

Kwast Wijnkopers is a family-owned business that has been importing and supplying quality wines to the Dutch hospitality sector and specialist wine retailers since 1978. Responsible business practices are central to its approach, reflecting a long-term commitment to taking responsibility for its impact across the value chain.

Building on this ambition, Kwast Wijnkopers wanted to gain a clearer understanding of its carbon emissions and set a science-based climate target. A request from a customer reinforced the growing importance of reliable emissions data in the market, providing a further incentive to get started.

Understanding the starting point

The Terrace helped Kwast Wijnkopers calculate the direct emissions from its own operations (Scope 1) and the indirect emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2). This included assessing energy consumption, the vehicle fleet and refrigerant leaks.

Together, we collected and checked the relevant data to calculate a carbon footprint in line with the GHG Protocol, the international standard for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. This gave Kwast Wijnkopers a clear picture of its main emissions sources and a consistent basis for tracking emissions in the years ahead.

A target grounded in science

Using this baseline, we worked together to develop a concrete emissions reduction target for the coming years, known within the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as a near-term target. This sets out how much an organisation needs to reduce its emissions in the short to medium term to align with a science-based emissions reduction pathway.

Kwast Wijnkopers’ target has now been officially validated by the SBTi: the company aims to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 46.2% by 2031, compared with a 2025 base year.

This gives Kwast Wijnkopers a clear direction for reducing its emissions. The next step is to translate the target into an emissions reduction roadmap, with practical measures, clear responsibilities and a timeline. By monitoring progress annually, Kwast can adjust its approach where needed and report transparently on the results. A milestone worth raising a glass to.

Are your customers increasingly asking for insight into your carbon emissions or a concrete climate target? We help organisations calculate a reliable carbon footprint and set a science-based emissions reduction target.
